Why does facebook demand peoples' phone numbers?

You can't create an account without providing a phone number. I guess email isn't enough for Mark Zuckerburg?

Facebook is so intrusive. And people just give out their personal info like free samples. You can't even delete your account. You "deactivate" it. And before you do, it has pictures saying "Jesse will miss you!" "Paul will miss you!" Zuckerburg is doing anything to keep you on Facebook; including forced access to your number and email address in order to send you notifications every half hour. Sure, you can opt of of those options.. but F*ckerburg still has your number and email.

from what I understand, they've been having lots of issues with fake accounts and social engineering. Having a number is just one extra step they can use to verify you are an actual person. You can always opt to make that information private, which I would strongly recommend

Facebook doesn't have my number, nor do I care to give it to them, and I've had a profile for several years now.

You're lucky you created your account before they implemented such an intrusive and offensive rule.

You can't when making a new account because they send you a text to verify, and if you don't verify, you don't get the account.

They're trying to reduce the number of fake profiles.
