Because people are afraid of getting hurt. Also people dont want to commit to others for a variety of reasons.

People fear what they do not know or understand.

I think it's the INITIAL prospect of being emotionally intimate with someone that can unleash a useless fear...Will they still like/love me after this? Will they just find someone else if there's one thing they don't like? It just calls for us to really realize no one is better than you, and that opening into intimacy seems daunting at first, but I think it can then start to relinquish fear deep down , the more we open, the more we see we have something special and unique -every one of us. It will keep becoming engrained, "you are good enough, no matter what happens"as TRUTH.. I'm working on this everyday..

Because in order to be intimate, one must allow oneself to be vulnerable and open to being hurt. Some people are so afraid of being hurt that they would rather be distant and alone than to risk being hurt by opening oneself up to the possibility.
