New Zealand just sounds so much better than Old Zealand lol.
The convention when naming a new place after a existing one. Zealand is a province of the Netherlands.
Good question. There must have been an old Zealand somewhere when they named it? ;}
Because there is a place in Denmark called Zealand.
There's a Dutch province called Zeeland. In 1642, Abel Tasman was the first European to discover the island which he called Nova Zeelandia. Later, Captain James Cook misspelled the translation and New Zealand stuck ever since.
I know, right? What happened to Old Zealand?
