You have a lot more nerve endings in your hands/feet/head than in other parts of your body. Our feet and hands are usually how we explore the world.

There's a hell of a lot of nerve endings in your feet, especially toes. Something to do with helping you balance, I think.
That's also why they're so ticklish and why treading on something sharp is so painful.
