Why does it take so long for you president to actually be the president?

I mean in Australia the votes are tallied and the winner is announced and ... Tada we have a new Prime Minister. It just seems with the american election you guys voted, it was tallied and the winner was announced but it's only now that your new President is actualy going to be classed as "The President". I am confused.

The original reason is quite quaint actually; it was, like puck61 says, to choose his cabinet, but it was also originally to allow these cabinet members to get to Washington by horse! I only know because i heard it on the news the other day & i found it interesting, as i'd always wondered why there was such a long delay myself. So there you go, that's why!

This way the president elect is able to choose certain people for key positions in his cabinet. It is a time to prepare his team in the white House.

In the UK the Prime Minister starts work and then chooses his cabinet. The Americans are too slow to catch a cold.

I am not really sure, but I would think that before the times of modern communication, and new voting technologies, it took a lot longer to tally all the votes. So I assume that it is just tradition that those dates are used, I doubt that it is practicle. But I don't really know, this is just a guess. Thank you.

It is from the old days......It took time for all of the votes to be tallied...becore computers...and phones...and all of that things.....

Also it too time to get to Washington before there were planes...csars...and trains......

We have never changed the laws...And tradition has a great deal to do with it....We might change governments more than the rest...But we still like to hold to traditions....Makes a great party...Knowing when it is going to happen...
