Why does my car making clicking noises when I first use it every day? Do I have a bad starter or solanoid?

My husband went to Colorado for a new job (wah!). He took the 'good car' (which was not a 'snow car' anyway), and left me with our '93 beat-up Suburban. Every day when I first go to drive it, I turn over the key and it clicks like crazy, and acts like it doesn't want to start. Once I've driven it, it'll start up every time if I'm running errands. Ideas, anyone?

Open the hood and look to see if they are coroded, then try to move the cable where it connects to the battery. Then wash your hands!

My guess is that it's the solenoid. Put a wrench across the connections of the solenoid to short them out. If this doesn't cause the motor to start turning then I'm wrong.

Most likely the battery, get the battery tested, if its the solenoid they usually replace the whole starter moter, battery would be cheaper, buy a decent battery, spend a bit more and et a good one

I'm betting on the battery. Try turning the key to the "acc" position (so the dash lights come on) for a minute or two before trying to crank the engine. The alternator charges the battery when you drive it, which is why it won't do that later in the day. But something is draining the battery while it's parked overnight. Used to happen to my old car all the time. I had to disconnect the battery when I got home or it wouldn't start in the morning.

Don't overlook the battery, a weak battery won't have the cranking amps to get it going fast enough sometimes. Always look at the cheapest problem first which would be the battery. Have the battery tested, auto parts places will do it for free and come out to the parking lot and do it for you. If it persists, It is probably the starter. Also don't forget to look at the posts and wires. If they are badly corroded or broken they won't deliver the amperage needed to start the car.
