Why does my University think all of the students are deeply sorrowed at the death of some random student?

Q&A Home   >  Community   >  WTK

Just to save face in the public eye?

Am I just being heartless in thinking, "I don't really care"? I didn't know the kid and don't really feel anything upon hearing he's dead. I don't even know his name.

His body was found on campus, outside one of the buildings.

Its all for show. They've got to advertise themselves as a caring institution so to make more feel its a great place to enrol.

Any loss of human life is sad. That's all I'll say about that.

For the circumstances involved for his family and friends, yeah. I can't expect a complete stranger to understand as they have no exclusive involvement..but because you feel the way you do, doesn't mean everyone else will.

    1) PR - they need to show that they give a damn even when they don't. So in this sense they don't really think that, they just need to seem like a caring institution - a close community. And it isn't really a lie per se unless you expect them to go out and get a list of students who care and students who don't...most students would at least say they would prefer the guy did not die even if they are not personally upset about it.

    2) They don't know which students will be affected; obviously those students who knew him will be, but some students who didn't will also be affected because there may be some similarity in their life that no one knows about (ex. someone else they know died about that, they are feeling suicidal, or something) or they are just sensitive. This way they can make sure that anyone who needs help - counselling or whatever - can get it without feeling that they shouldn't need it.

Why? Do you feel saddened whenever you hear about some random person dying?

Can't have kids dying on campus and not saying, "We're so sorry about this" now can you?

Think of it this way, if I die... a perfect stranger's not going to give 2 %^&*s. why would anyone expect them too.
