Oh wow, you really want to go deep on this, don't you? Well, some of the root causes are: social, political, economical, habitual, instinctual, educational, family, heritage, pride, tribal, learned, ...etc. Pick any one of them and there will be an ocean of info for you to study for as long as you wish...

Im beginning to think they are a necessary population control system. If you add up all the people who were killed in wars in the last century, and bring them back to life, then add on their children ,gran children etc, we would be dangerously overpopulated. Its already overpopulated in some parts of the world.

It does plenty to stop it. Look at your history. Western Europe has not had a war in nearly seven decades. The last time that was the case, there were no homo sapiens in Europe. No major wars in Asia for forty years. Latin America's last big one was the Mexican Civil War which ended ninety years ago.

Look up the Kellogg-Briand Treaty on wikipedia. That should answer your question quite nicely.
