Why does time seem to go by much faster the older you get?

When you are 5 years old, 1 year is 20% of your entire life. When you are 10 years old, 1 year is 10% of your entire life. When you are 20, 1 year is now just 5% of your life, etc. You see where I am going with this? The older you get, 1 year is a smaller part of your entire life's experiences, so it will seem quicker than when you were a kid.

As we get older we don't stop and smell the flowers (so to speak). We rush around and lose our zest for life. So times seems to go by faster.

Take time out, talk to your houseplants. Thank the big tree in your yard for the shade it gives. (lol i sound so cheesy right now) But really we need to enjoy what time we do have. We arent' guaranteed tomorrow.

As you get older you better understand the value of time.

When you are younger you have no value or appreciation for time.

I recently came up with a theory that time-perception changes as we age in direct proportion to the interplay between awareness and memory recollection. It can best be explained thusly:

Say you're driving on a trip across the country as a passenger. Instead of looking at the environment as it is passing by and taking in new information, every 15 minutes you look at pictures from an hour previous and go into a daydream, recalling what the trip was like "back then". After awhile, your entire trip develops a pattern of merely experiencing very little in the moment, and merely recalling where you've been. After 200 miles, you are still thinking about the first 10. Two things happen:

1.) You have spent almost your entire trip substituting what's going on inside your head for what's going on outside your window, and

2.) Your conception of time is distorted because you spend most of it in the past.

A child rarely does this. An 8 year old has no recollection of when they were two, and even their memories of 5 are fuzzy. That's only a 3-6 year span - whereas a 25 year old can easily remember 19 and 22. This is because they spend more of their time "experiencing" those ages than the present day.

There are reasons for this, but I'll save it for the question, "What's so damn attractive about the past/future?"

Youth see time in it's vastness, age knows time is fleeting.
