Kittycat nailed it. The only thing I'd add is that in rose breeding everything is a trade off. To gain in one trait you have to lose in another: size, color, smell, thorns, pest resistance, disease resistance, temperature tolerance, etc. The best and strongest smelling roses I have found were small, bug eaten and looked like crap, but damn did they smell good.

roses have been genetically engineered to be bigger,brighter, fuller, basically more beautiful. as a side effect all the roses internal work went to making these changes and they no longer had the enegry to produce scent as well. very few strains of roses nowadays produce any kind of scent.
