Its a sign of rebellion, he is leaving behind the "good" as shaving his head is a generalization of convicts and this shows his "bad" which he is reflecting on now.

Do you have any idea how hard it is to fight with hair on your head? It's ridiculously difficult, especially if you are worried about how your hair looks. It's terribly hard to be good and vain simultaneously.
