It doesn't include the "contagious" part since I haven't observed anything to support that part... But as far as ignorance... Many people seem to form an opinion or an idea and find pieces of information that supports their idea or opinion, and reject anything that doesn't support it. Then they build a mental wall to protect those ideas and opinions which can include insulting anyone who has other ideas or opinions... even to the point of becoming hostile. It seems that driving away those with other opinions is equal to being right for some people... regardless of what ideas and opinions they're attempting to defend. It seems to be easier and more preferable to endlessly argue a preconceived opinion than to allow any new information into the thought process.
