Why is Israel called one of the USA's "major allies"?

Just heard that reference on the news and it makes me wonder -- just when has Israel ever come to the aid of the US in anything? I believe in the existence of the Israeli state, but isn't the US-Israeli relationship pretty much a one-way street?

Beause it is true. Israel is the one democracy in the middle east. It has developed jointly the Iron Dome and many other defensive weapons systems for the USA. it devleops jointly many weapons systems used by both countries.

But we have to be honest here Israel did provide some bombs but not TO the US but ON the US! Yeah why do you think all of these organizations are targeting the US? Even 9/11! one of the major reasons is the US supporting Israel! If I were the US I would’ve ran the hell away from Israel!!!!

Israel is our only allie in the Middle East. Israel is a democracy, and they are a lot like Americans. Obama is betraying Israel and it is absolutely terrible. Support Israel.

Just when has anyone come to the aid of the US in much of anything since WWII?

Israel is as much of an ally as anyone, we share Democratic and moral values. They help with intelligence from a dangerous part of the world. They're a technological powerhouse.

Turn it around, why would you consider them not a friendly ally?

Well, at least in places like Iraq, etc., we get some help from some countries. But I've never heard of Israel sending support or troops anywhere to aid us. I'm not saying they're not some sort of "friend", but I wonder about that MAJOR ally tag.

I don't think Israel lets us stay with them at any time, but I might be wrong. We have bases on Israeli land?

There was also an in-depth TV documentary on the Liberty attack some years ago -- oddly (or maybe not so oddly) it's one of the few documentaries that isn't constantly repeated.

Maybe because they need the USA and the people of the USA recognize that Israel is the only true democracy in the middle east. The Arab nations are not our friends. Most of the 19 9/11 hijackers came from Saudi Arabia. Last I checked, none of them came from Israel.

Not sure just how Israeli Arabs feel about it being a "true democracy" since they are so often treated as second-class citizens. But I'm not saying Israel is worse than the Arab nations, just wondering how it qualifies as a "major ally" except in the minds of the Christian Right who consider Israel's existence the first step toward their eagerly awaited Apocalypse.

Ah, so your beef is not with Israel, but with the Christian right. I see. The real enemy is at home, eh?
