In reality it's not ALWAYS bad news. However, bad news happens to "sell" much better than good news.
Might you imagine the ho-hum response if the evening news proclaimed, "thousands of airplanes landed at nations airports without incident!!!"
Rather, when one hears "A late-winter snowstorm is bearing down upon the local area", we stand up and take notice.

At risk of over-thinking my answer, I hope you please bear with me as to why I think this is so:
Imagine the time, some 10,000+ years ago. If we heard a rustling in the bushes, there might be two possible major causes --- the wind is blowing through the bushes, -- or there is a bear or a wolf lurking nearby. Okay so far?
Now, it would be in mankind's best interest to "assume the worst", and run for cover, in the event that there was a bear nearby --- even if the REAL reason was only the wind!!
Why? Because if you assume wrongly (that it's just the wind) and it's really a bear -- then the odds are that you would not live long enough to have kids who inherit your natural fear of bad things happening.
So goes the way with our "appreciation" of bad news, as opposed to good news.
Enough of my rambling,
Cheers,
