any conversation is appropriate if its held in a private place...
men who talk like that in front of a woman are probably testing her level of "propriety"
When it comes to a woman's period...men are seriously grossed out
When it comes to their front and center member...they are proud...
A period is not equal to the male member.
Now, if you want to talk about how your boobs perk up when its cold...men will not gross out...and will listen eagerly.

A woman's period has the stigma that is more equal to a man pre-*********** or not being able to perform...

Why wouldn't it be appropriate for girls to talk about their periods? It's a pretty fascinating subject, specially for those who doesn't experience it.

Boys boast about Morning erections, never believe the size though. Girls just stay quite about periods and deal with it as we are clever and strong.
