Our lives are empty. We work all day at jobs we don't like to get money we don't get keep that we spend on things we really don't want to impress people we really don't like.
The meaningful things in our lives, family, friends, struggle, adventure, fear, victory, defeat, have been replaced with bland prepackaged experiences that can only mimic reality. We have reality television instead of living. We have facebook instead of friendship. We have pharmaceuticals instead of fun. We need to start living again, but that isn't good for business.

That's a really good question. But how do we know people weren't depressed before, but just had no venue to express it? They were too afraid to express their dissatisfaction with life due to the fear of social exile. Today, we have the internet, where we can be anonymous for the most part. Also, the family structure and community structure is broken down. We compare the quality of our lives to the imaginary characters we see on TV and think that things should be better. Perhaps our expectations are too high? Beyond that, I can say, there is really less opportunity for young people in the workplace and to achieve an education, so they are stuck in bullsh&^ jobs that they hate.

There are many variables. I'm sure you've heard the expression, "it's in the water"
    Some reasons:
    1) Processed food many people eat
    2) Lack of exercise! Obesity problem.
    3) Lack of 'real' social connection
    4) Financial crisis / money problems
    The list is much longer...............................

Because ironically, the conveniences of today have made people weaker, lazier, more spoiled, more entitled, and less equipped to handle the rigors of daily living on a physical, emotional, and psychological level.
