    Often because the answer is more complex than the asker thinks.

    Because invariably if you do reply with a 'Yes' or 'No' someone will ask 'Why ?'

    This is a "Why" question so therefore requires a "because" answer.
    Because they want to give their reason for saying yes or no to give you more information and in the hope of getting a response. Also in England it would normally be considered impolite to answer with an abrubt yes or no. A yes or no answer usually blocks conversation.

    people would be better off if they did. sometimes people offer more information than needed, because they are needy. is that a good answer?
