In most higher species the Alpha males attention is vied for by the females, the alpha has to fight to retain his privilege. Its the lower ranking or unaffiliated males who have to court fo females.

That's not really true, it's quite balanced, excluding the places where men are expected to just pick and take. There are some guys who like to try hitting on everything, but that's really unattractive.
