Depends on what one god you are talking about. If you are talking about the god of christianity, it is because a long time ago a war was waged to make christianity the only religion. As you may be able to tell, the war is still going strong!

Imperialism. Jehovah/Yahweh was a tribal god. Another one amidst many. They got state backing and that led to monotheism in Europe and Middle East. But they had to kill a lot of Pagans and people that held alternative beliefs on the way to dominance.

Well it was due to the Catholics mostly, as they went on the crusades and tortured people until they gave up their religions and became Catholic.

it's those bloody X-tians...think they can score points by prosthelytizing...and the mohammedans are doing it, too...still lots of gods in the hindu pantheon, tho...i'm partial to ganesha...i have a statue of her on my desk...if it helps, a lot of those old gods were all just different versions/interpretations of the same tradition, so sometimes, it was just evolution
