Why is it that the world is stuck on the stereotype of thin is better than plus size?

What I heard is this:

Back in the day, like of peasants and kings and whatnot it was stylish to be pale and plump. If you were pale and had a little more weight to you it usually meant that you were royalty or some kind of rich person that didn't have to work for a living.

If you were tan and thin you were probably a peasant.

Nowadays, with food fully abundant and no more slavery, its easy for people to get pale and plump.

So maybe people always want what is harder to attain?

I donno

Because our culture is programmed by tv and is dumb enough to believe it.

Hi sexyback
It is not a stereotype to say being thin is better than being plus size. It is an opinion. It could be a stereotype to say that all thin people are more attractive than plus size people. That is plainly not the case but may reflect a general truth.
There is research to show that people find certain proportions more attractive across cultures. This is a human architype of what is a sexually attractive woman. The world reflects human animal sexual drives and that is why the world is stuck on this architype. This is not really "thin" though and requires curves.
Surely the breast enhancement business is created by this drive to achieve the optimum sexual attractiveness proportion.
For myself I think natural is best.
Hope this helps!

Venus the love goddess is always represented as a little plump - because plump at one time represented being wealthy and nurturing.

I dont know for sure. I think its because thin people are thought of as more healthy. People tend to want to reproduce subconsciously with the healthy members of their species to have healthy children.

I think it's because some people see a plus size person as unfit or lazy, which isn't always the case.
It isn't healthy to be too overweight, the same as it isn't healthy to be underweight. As long as you're in good health, you are comfortable in who you are then your size should only be a number, not an obsession.

Because it's difficult for most people to do.
Back in the day when food was scarce "plus size" was the ideal. Rare was the person that could eat enough to get that fat.

They look better to us, because we have constantly been told that you must be thin for the past 60 years. You don't see any hot bigger girls in movies, tv, etc.

I blame Twiggy. Before her Marilyn Monroe types were considered sexy, and she was a size 14. Since the 60s thin has been in.

If you think of it though it is about time thin girls got their day. Through out history bigger women have always been considered sexier. I would have been really hot during the renaisance, the victorian era, or even the 50s. : )

Because the world is vain, but do you know what? progamed in guys brian is the need to find a "big" person as they will be able to carry a child better, thats how men find their wifes/girlfriends.

same thing that makes george clooney's face more attractive (better?) than tom green's to most of america, or that makes strawberries more delicious than strawberries. part darwin, part culture. i fell in love with olivia newton john as a child because my best friend did. our preferences are the result of a blended cocktail of variables, most of which are unconscious or due to chance.

what do you mean by better? attractive? If so it probably goes back to designers thinking that their clothes hang better on skinny people so the models have to be thin tofit into the sample sizes and get work and then the public sees these thin modles in magazines and on the runway and that is the media sending the message of what is popular and then actresses copy that to conform and round and round it goes.. It is healthier not be overweight but just as unhealthy to be underweight.

If by better you mean sexier then it comes down to attitude. Most full figured women are not in a good place mentally about themselves, having low self esteem and lacking confidence. A few ladies like Queen Latifah have proven that plus size gals can be amazing but they are the exceptions.

I'm not the world... I feel it is a persons personality that is what matters. Ppl in Hollywood act one way when being in public and another when in private.

because they target our young kids whoe are easily influenced by that stuff... now that those kids are older... they created our present wich was their future and now they belive thats how it just is... and it sucks that those of us who are not in that state of mind have to suffer... meaning us plus sized natural boobed girls.

I signed on today but I wanted to really respond to this, this a long read lol.

Because our society is focused on "image" moreso than health. "Thin" or "Disiel" bodytypes is what society wants to see rather they exaggerate the myths and truths about health or not.

Being a black woman and being on the negative recieving end of all the weight stats it's harder for me to deal with.

My culture celebrates normal healthy bodies with curves, but euro influenced society has made sure that doesn't carry on so they feed ethinic cultures the whole "Thin is in" Curves is fat" thing. Basically there's no such thing as too thin in our society but there's a such thing as too fat and too normal.

If you watch the diet and excercise programs none of them address health exactly, it's just a bunch of people talking about how bad they felt image wise because they were bigger. And then they say how good they feel because now they "LOOK" skinny or thin and how they're excepted more.

I feel it's unfair because size labeling targets women more. If you look at all of the weight loss programs they all have women as the majority doing the promotion. Rarely are men critcisized for having just a little here or there or being "Slightly" overweight but women are damned to hell if we are. If you look at certain actors and music faces the most popular one's are heavy set a slightly chubby men. Jack Black, um the late Notorious B.I.G. etc. If you look at most of the men in Hollywood some of them have normal sometimes chubby healthy bodies, but the women are forced to carry on a certain size and look to their bodies and the bigger gals or the "Normal" sized gals are damned to hell. In Hollywood there's no sexualized admired plus sized woman people love and look up to.Most of the curvy or plus sized women have been bahsed for their size and weight, and have been forced to lose weight.

I truely feel the only reason society is so obsessed with getting America "Thin" is because of women only. If our country was full of chunky men and all the women were size zeros there would be no crack down on obesity or overweight persons because men get a pass and women are seeked to be perfect body wise.

Doctors are right most of the time, not all of the time when it comes to health but they're also biased. They make all of these new found statistics and studies to scare people thin, because most doctors are biased when it comes to plus sized people. They rather cater and tend to an AIDS patient who's extemely sick and thin with no gloves on than help a plus sized patient with a broken leg or something. There has been plus sized patients who have been extremely healthy but have been told ot lose weight anyway. Then you have unhealthy thin people come in the doctor's office and only given minor adjustments to their everyday lifestyle.

Why not promote "HAES" Health at every size? How about promoting good healthy habits and a active lifestyle instead od making people thin? I agree when too big is too big and too thin is too thin, but now-a-days normal isn't even good enough for women, they're seeking specific body types, and you have young kids being pressured to look and live lives like fitness gurus instead of telling your kids to have a peice of fruit every other day and yo go play outside after school before dinner or something it's ridiculous.

It's all about image like I said it's a one sided discussion, we can sit here and act as if anorexia, bulimia and other underweight eating disorders don't exist when they do to throw people off so the focus can remain on "Thin is good big is bad", but it's totally ridiculous. Those diseases are on the rise especially in minority women now more than ever, but it goes overlooked because they don't want to dillute the "Thin is good" push. Also there's no solid proof of an obesity epidemic. Overweight men and boys statistic wise have stayed the exact same it hasn't increased or decreased. And overweight women has steadily decreased, so I don't know what they are trying to do here, other than I feel like they're trying to help the weight loss industry sell more. Also doctors feel caring for an overweight patient as to a extremely ill thin patient is taking too much out of their pockets, especially in the health care industry now that's pure bias.

Back in the day the image of woman was that of curves, you can go back into the biblical days where angels were painted curvy looking not rail thin looking like they hopped off boflex. Supermodels or 60's pin-up models were curvy. If you look at burlesque women back in the days they were curvy. If you look at the clothing back then the dressed were made to create and hourglass look. Tell me why was America supposedly healthier back then when the images promoted were that of a normal body type than now where the image is "Thin, thin, thin"? Americans have become rebellious because it's too much of an unrealistic measurement to ask for. If America promoted a normal body type for men and women people would feel more comfortable and continue to make more healthy choices.

I still don't know why people soley go by this BMI scale when it's been said numerous times that it doesn't exactly determine whether a person is healthy or not. It's just a man made system to determine a person's health and weight.

It's not about getting America healthy it's about how many Americans mainly"women" we scare into looking thin so our country can look good in their opinion. It's annoying when you see the weight loss commercials and healthy sized women saying "I went from a size 8 to a size 2 in just three months, or women saying I weny from a size 12 to a size 4 in just a month". Just absurd. And trying to rid the world of bigger sized women and men are just dilluting the different diverse bodyt types. If we all were the same size and shape then the men or women who desire something different, what will they have to choose from?

If they want to address health then why condone ubber thin and underweight bodies and bash plus size people? That's being biased. I don't buy supermodels only being used as walking clothes hangers because if that's true, then why do they have to be pretty if that's the case? If it was just about the clothes then the models don't supposed to capture the people interest alone.

Let's face it the media makes people zombies, we believe in all of the statistics be they exaggerated or not even when some of them are strictly opinion and bias. If someone says the sky is blue with red stripes and they keep saying I can prove it, without realy proving it, then we're gonne start to believe the sky is blue with red stripes.

Bottom skinny people have heart issues, diabetes and many other illnesses as bigger people. Alot of these illnesses are tiggered by stress and not so much about what's being consumed. That's the health stat they dont' add into the discussion. Tell why alot of athletes suffer that heart condition, and they're suppose to be the healthiest bunch in the world? I see so called healthy sized people suffering and dying from cancer or lung diesease etc. More than I see normal sized or average heavy set men or women dropping dead on the streets come on now. Being slightly overweight isn't even in the top 3 amongst killer of human beings.

No one's going to tell people that skinny women are most likely to suffer from cervical cancer than bigger women, no one's going to pull up the article that a bigger butt protects from diabetes? No one is going to mention that bigger women live longer than thier thinner counterparts? I'm not making this up I can find the articles to prove it.

It's become annoying in a sense and it seems like people still follow along the same stereotypes like little zombies. But like the gay community, the vegan community, and my community you know African American community has fought for equal treatment and rights then so can the plus size community.
