Why is the fashion norm that socks should match?

Its really the only part of the body where two symmetrical body parts wear a different piece of clothing, so why is the norm for them to match, instead of to not match and be expressive

I have worn up matched socks simply because I couldn't find any matches....the sock monster ate then. Sure if that your creative expression, and cool with one bright and one dark colored sock why not. It would be much easier that way anyways.

Apparently based on all the commentary one receives when wearing non-matching socks in public
