Oh oh, I actually know this :D
I learnt it off my old English teach. It's from Shakespeare, Henry VI.

There's a line that goes: "seal up your lips and give no words but mum."

CorneaGenii is right, the "mum" comes from the Mmmming sound when we have a closed mouth.

The "mum" is for the MMMMing sound a closed mouth makes trying to speak. Also could be short for "mumble".

I think it comes from 'mama'. This is the Latin word for mother. There are a lot of countries where children say mama, mum, ma or mam.
Language changes over time, changing the words a little.
So, children speak Latin from a very early age and mothers have always been important.
