Why is the word Mum?

People say Mum's the word.

Oh oh, I actually know this :D
I learnt it off my old English teach. It's from Shakespeare, Henry VI.

There's a line that goes: "seal up your lips and give no words but mum."

CorneaGenii is right, the "mum" comes from the Mmmming sound when we have a closed mouth.

bosgek	Posted Jun 26th, 2009 at 1:43PM I think it comes from 'mama'. This is the Latin word for mother. There are a lot of countries where children say mama, mum, ma or mam. Language changes over time, changing the words a little. So, children speak Latin from a very early age and mothers have always been important. Rated: +1Vote for this!
