I think it is a combination of the movie makers dumbing the movie down to make it qualify for PG-13 to allow middle schoolers to see it, and special effects. <br />

It is kind of paradoxical that special effects take the scary out of scary movies in many cases. Clever writing and a good, scary plot combined with the viewer's imagination will make a movie far scarier than buckets of blood, or CG.

there are that many horrible events going on in the world on a daily basis you only have to watch some of the news events with the scant details mentioned, you can piece together with a vivid imagination the terror those have experienced. so yes i have become decencitised to horror movies utterly and it is the real life events that horrify me.

As sunny says, we are desensitized, there's no doubt about that. It might not seem scary (to some) to think about th types of games that kids play on their games machines, whilst others might feel differently also. We can go on to blame their parents for allowing kids to play such games, but there is a peer pressure out there which is already set; a kid wants to play the same games as his friends, so why should s/he be any different? I'm not diverting the question because it reaches the same point.<br />

sc<x>ript writers and film directors are out to push the barriers in all genres of sc<x>ripts, horror is no different but it should be said that horror holds the greatest 'skill' in just what can be done. I think there are horror movies which are more intent on gore than the actual story-line or plot. I also think that more people are more interested in the gore than in the plot itself.<br />

Good horror movies aren't necessarily the gory ones. I recommend The Loved Ones. Real creepy.

There is a sense of irony in your question. You ask if we are immune to horror, but then imply that we need more decent scary movies.... which would work towards numbing us to horror.<br />

I think horror is doing fine. The Paranormal franchise is doing well. The Devil Inside was quite a hit as well. But "decent" is subjective. Can't satisfy everyone.

Devil Inside was SO disappointing. Hated the ending.

Thats what I mean. Good for some, not for others. To me, the ending isn't the key to a horror movie. The key is did it scare me or get me uncomfortable.
