    I've never heard of boys being only allowed to play as goalie when there is no team offered to boys. At least in high schools, there are more and more boys going out for girl's field hockey - something that wasn't allowed when I was a boy for both field hockey and volleyball. This is true for high schools only, not sure about other divisions.

    Men's field hockey here in the US is predominantly at colleges in the northeastern part of the country. Most players are from more well to do families.
