Well, as it stands, its down to individuals to change their own attitudes, which is a shame really.

We are ALL selfish to some extent.
For example, saving your wife or a random stranger with one million kids to provide. Of course you would save your wife -unless you hate her- either ways it would be a selfish decision.

It's just within the human nature.

Off course, I agree that am a selfish but when ? When am in the airplane..If the airplane is going to blast and if rescue people is going to say we are not able to safe all the passengers we are able to safe only one passenger. So all of you passengers have to decide who is the one person.. So at that time I will say all of them. The only one person who is going to safe the person have to be percious to his family & to the society and with out him the family is not able to run.....

Your example does not differential between good common sense and self centred one, either way you can only safe one and it is difficult to prove motives.

It is the natural state, altruism is seated in empathy, which is only develops with time, perspective, and experience. Some people, due to proper nurturing and parenting, develop it very early. Many do no develop it until they learn to view other people as being as important as themselves. Some people never develop it, or see anyone or anything being as important to this universe as themselves.

You could say that altruism and empathy are learned behaviors, that would be accurate, but also would be somewhat demeaning to these two important characteristics.
