Because these are two thing they don't have control over, but they effects their life, so they can only talk about them

Because they are the topics where everybody thinks 'I am right and the others are wrong', so there's a lot to argue.

It is a good way of getting people to talk. I teach English to foreigners of all different nationalities in mixed classes, of course they are of different religions too, Christians, Muslims, a few Jews, Buddhists, Atheists, etc, and they all have different political views. Sometimes I have noticed if their English grammar is not too good I need to get them to talk so sometimes I purposely drop in a question about politics or religion and suddenly the people are talking without thinking about grammar rules or how to form sentences, they just speak and I think "is that the same student who was struggling a while ago to get a sentence together?" They speak with emotion because they feel strongly about something or have definite opinions about it. Of course in my class we respect everyone's point of view. But it really is good for discussion purposes. Sometimes we talk about religion in general or politics in general not about our own personal views.

Because our individual decisions about politics and religion affect everybody's lives - so it's much bigger than personal. If, for example, my neighbour votes for an extremist party like the UK's Conservatives, who want to hand our taxpayer-owned National Health Service to the corporate sector, that will have a direct effect on my life and the rest of the community. So I'm gonna have pretty strong views about it!

It`s because religion is political, and politics are religious, you can`t escape one without other catching the other like a bad dose of `flu, we need comforting.

Politics and religion often define our societies - they are essential to understanding the nature of our social environments, and yet almost all religious and political institutions are run by the corrupt and power hungry for their own benefit, rather than the benefits of those they purport to serve.
Given that premise, I would say that we don't discuss them enough. More political engagement by the populace would reduce the power of the politico-religious oligarch that does us so much harm
