Why the Discovery Channel and TLC etc do not have Educational/Documentary shows anymore and they just have Reality TV?

The discovery channel just occasionaly has something interesting and documentaries but they use to have them all the time. Now it's just a bunch of Reality shows. What happened and why ? Does it cost to much to produce documentaries and stuff like that?

TLC, A&E, Discovery are all sack of sh!t channels anymore. They had revenue goals, and the old model no longer worked. It is unfortunate for those of us who enjoyed the old days of cable.

Funny to find this because I was literally thinking about this earlier today.

Like sex, sh!t apparently sells. That and no one wants anything resembling intelligent television anymore.

The same holds true for the History Channel. I think it boils down to two things. Reality TV is much cheaper for networks to produce. Second, many people are becoming content with a lower standared of entertainment nowadays. So the networks are just responding to that trend.

docs are very expensive to produce they require tons of research and editing
with reality tv all they have to do is turn the camera on and let the idiots perform

Very few want to be educated anymore they are more concerned with the drama of staged shows....
They enjoy that drama because their lives suck and the shows make them feel better about theirselves

"Reality TV" is an easy way to launch a show ... without having to hire qualified writers!!! It takes a lot of time, effort and expense to put out a good educational or documentary series, such as Nova on PBS. It is cheaper and easier for a TV station to send a camera team on the road and call it "Operation Repo" or "Fast 'n Loud".

    Sad but true.

    Cheers,

Cause they're cheaper to make probaby, and they think its what people want to see. Its like a vending machine in a cafeteria. Its full of junk food, and people seem to keep buying it, so people must just want to eat junk food.
