For all the effort that went into the planing and diging the tunnels , For those times in Germany if even one man were to escape uncaptured That would be a slap in the face for hitler thus degrading his so called master race .Now Johnnyboy from a 06 full bird retired army colonel's view the sole reason for the escape in such mass numbers was to keep as many Nazi troops occupied with chasing after them in all directions and confusing the enemy + harrassing them into having far less troops on the front lines thus allowing allied forces to do their job with less resistance , In summary : They sacrificed themselves to help win the war .
