Why would an old lawyer go paperless (scan all documents)?

A lot of older lawyers (40's, 50's) have lots of paper documents. Practicing attorneys can benefit because they can pull up client files very quickly, from computers, from home, and it saves time. They can search for text automatically, too (OCR). But older lawyers... would they need it? I guess criminal lawyers would, who have discovery... But what can I tell an older lawyer who will tell me "my way worked for 25 years"?

It saves a stack of space you're wasting with filing (space in buildings is usually our biggest expense). You cand keep a copy off site in case of fires etc. Paper copies often degenerate with age. This prevents that, somewhat.

I'd ask him or her how much they enjoy shredding old documents, or paying staff to shred them. I have to shred everything I print when I'm done with it in my line of work, and I can tell you that gets tedious. I find I print far less than I used to!

i don't fully trust paperless systems but offices are moving more towards them. Maybe the old lawyer just wants the extra room when he gets rid of all the filing cabinets...you should prob ask them.

I worked for an older attorney who wouldn't even put his calandar on the computer. Every one else was on blackberry and i still kept his calendar up with pencil and paper. It worked fine, but it was more of a pain b/c i constantly had to 'merge' his with mine so as not to double book him. He wouldn't get rid of his old boxes of past files either. Wouldn't even send them off to storage in fear of losing them. He cracked me up but I guess his way has worked for years so why change it? I'd let sleeping dogs lie. Let the old man finish his few years the way he wants.
