Experience shows that short, distinctive names helps people distinguish storm names better. They alternate between male and female names and once a storm does an especially catastrophic amount of damage, the storm name is then retired and replaced with a name of like gender. They have a set of 6 names they recycle except for retired names. This has been in place since 1979 despite the fact that hurricanes have had names sine 1950.
