we dont live in the same america as 50 or 60 years ago which in many ways is a sad fact, the loss of patriotism being one of those .youth today are numb to what war really is because on a game you die you try a different strategy, instead of he died so now you try a different strategy . my generation doesnt understand the sacrifice these man and women really make weather years of their life, or something more mental or physical . it really is sad how anaware ppl are, because without our enlisted population tje rest would crumble.

ive never served, but thank god the creator for the brave souls that do

As a vietnam Vet, I thank you! I wish all of the men and women who have served and are serving could be treated better. God knows they deserve it!

It's easy to be nice (on the surface, anyway) to the vets when one has the luxury of a booming economy and is feeling good about things. That said, don't get too caught up in thinking about how dandy things were for the vets. Veterans' benefits concerning injuries were much stingier back then. Take John Smitherman, for example, who got screwed up from being a human guinea pig in nuclear tests. He wound up getting free treatment...from JAPAN; Uncle Sam did nothing for him, no treatment at all.

A lot of the veneration for WWII vets is in retrospect, didn't really hit until the 80s and 90s.

I agree that the Vietnam vets were treated in an apalling fashion. How I wish we could improve the economy and provide jobs for everyone...but they are few and far between...for everyone nowadays, not just vets.

So true. Very much a "national disgrace."
