Wild orca whale caught in the ropes of a crayfish pot in NZ waters and lets a diver cut it free..
the diver said...it was like the orca knew he was there to help.
I find it even more amazing that it's calls brought a group of other orcas and they didn't interfere with the diver...like they all knew.
your thoughts?

Well the human brain is 3 pounds and the orca brain 15 pounds... (I know there is more to it than that but they are not simply dumb animals....)
They are definitely just as conscious and aware as we are, how good their memory and deductive reasoning is, is a grey area I guess but I would guess that they would probably fall somewhere with in the human range.... perhaps being equivalent to a 5th grader or something.... (who knows) and no doubt would be superior in other ways that we don't understand probably...
And judging by their behavior this view is borne out time and time again in stories and observations such as the one you brought to our attention....
This is why killing a whale is murder....
It may be easy to label them as "just fish" but knowing what we know now, any thinking man would have to consider that we are dealing with an animal that, beside the fact they have no proper hands or written language to build up their stores of knowledge etc... are otherwise our equals.Like (1)

FYI... (and on a different tack) I was once at the whaling museum in Warnambool (whaling featuring prominently in their history and now whale watching)... and there I heard a very interesting old tale of a certain killer whale (very much like an orca) which would lead the whaling fleet (back in the 17 or 1800s) out to the where the whales were at....the whalers would make many kills and this particular animal and his mates would get their fair share in return for their services.... This went on for decades etc and when this animal died so did their little marriage of convenience....Like (1)

Saw a documentary on TV recently... They are the most intelligent of fish , about a few subsiding a ice berg full of walruses etc...

Very intuitive , when one of their own is being helped. I saw a program a few weeks ago where a whale was freed by a diver from nets and after it swam free , he dived out of the water , stood on his tail back in the water and up again before he swam away. The family's little girl said he's thanking you for freeing him. I like to think he was.
