I prefer frosting but even putting that bias aside, no, I don't think icing is the way go.

Depends on what kind of icing it is. There's some really icky stuff that turns bitter after you have a bunch of it. I like putting icing and frosting on things like wheat thins and ritz. The crunchy saltiness really compliments the sweetness of the icing and frosting.
If it's the thick,super sweet kind,yeah,it's good on everything.
