A major third party? Not sure, the amount of Independent voters (not Independent party) is on the rise, so maybe the two party system is on the way out.

The Republican party is cracking in half. There are a lot of fiscal conservatives and moderates who aren't willing to follow the evangelicals down the path of draconian social policies and restrictions of personal freedoms. I could see a modified version of the Libertarian party gaining momentum and becoming a home for the reasonable Republicans who need a party to express their fiscal views.

The closest to date, was the Progressive Party of Teddy Roosevelt with about a third of the vote (scared the hell out of both parties) but he returned to the Republican Party. The last big run was the first time Ross Perot with the Reform Party with close to 20% of the vote. The next time out he received less than 10%. Possible but, highly improbable.

People are brainwashed that if they do not vote for the 2 major parties, then they was wasting their vote. As long as people do that, they will never have a real choice. If enough people voted for who they reallyw ant rather than who they think can win, perhaps things would change.

There are already several - Green, Peace & Freedom, Libertarian - but the vast majority of Americans have a more (right-of-) Centrist philosphy as stick with the Big Two. Ross Perot's Independent Party was a pretty significant contender for five or ten minutes. ALL things change, and I'm sure the oligopoly of the Demopublicans will, as well; the questions is, will there still be an America by then?

the only time you will see complete agreement between both dems and reps will be to keep a third party in the shadows

Three party systems are just as confusing. We have that here in Canada.
