Resolved Question

Would it hurt you to break off an old friendship?

If you had been friends with somebody for 10 years, even though you didn't always have the opportunity to see them as often as you'd like, and you were forced to end this friendship because of a significant other's jealousy issues--would you be mad or upset at all? Even if you went along with it?

I'm asking this because I was friends with my one ex, but he abandoned our friendship after his fiance got pissed.

I've had to do it twice so far. Might be doing it for a 3rd time shortly since a male friend is getting married and his fiancee is iffy about me instead of getting to know me. Im not really hurt by it, I find if a male friend or an ex doesn't have the balls to tell his gf that our friendship is important then he doesn't deserve to be in my life if I'm only kept on the side.

Don't ever break off a friendship, due to a guy's jealousy issues....He's going to turn out to be an abuser.....Guys come and go, but this is your friend....

He is trying to isolate you....a common control tactic, among future abusers.

Keep the friend, lose the guy.

You should never let someone else choose your friends for you. Do not let someone control you like that because they'll just continue until they have you completely dependant on them and them alone. That's what they want and then they can do whatever they want to you because you have no place or nobody to turn to.

I agree with Unicorn, lose the controlling guy and keep the friend.

I would be hurt. Can you talk to the significant other and let them know you are just friends and would never interfere with what they have. You know better.

If that doesn't work then end it for your friends sake. Yes I would be mad and upset but you don't want their relationship ruined. Take the high road and the pain will pass over time.

I'm sorry for your friend too.

Yes, it would hurt to break off such and old friendship. But sometimes it is less painful to do it than have to continue on with disagreements. good luck .

Well there are 2 sides to any story..right? I would have a hard time convincing my partner to allow me to remain friends with a former lover..I haven't had any former lovers worth hanging on to...hence the former..lol. But for what its worth..if after all you went through together and the years you shared..if you both still loved eachother as friends..No I would never let that go...frienship is sacred...So I guess the question is did your friend want more than that..was he just waiting until it falls apart with your new partner?? Or were you so deeply connected as friends...if you have let him go and regret it..fix it...if you can..your new partner should respect that..he may just feel threatened..i guess you have to respect that too..a tricky one...life is about choice right?good luck..

I definitely woud be hurt. Personally, I have always told my boyfriend that since the majority of my friends are boys, he has no choice but to put up. Not that he is a jealous person, but I thought I'd lay that down before it ever became an issue, since it should not have to be one.
