Would people panic if the government one day confirmed the existence of extraterrestrials?

Or even showed one to us? How would that affect society at large? What are your thoughts...

No logical government (even as evil as this sounds) would ever volunteer the information unless it was clearly about to be impossible to lie about. Anything that churns people together in suspicion or doubt or pain or fear is a danger to maintaining internal peace and order and letting them operate without difficulty or bad press.

If "The Government" should ever open up and reveal the truth of extraterrestrial life then I'd be concerned because they would only be revealing it if they had no other choice.

We still can't see full briefings about the JFK Assassination... so a random influx of previously confidential information would probably come before something as frightening as the press release was shocking.

roarke09	Posted Oct 5th, 2009 at 7:41PM Most people wouldn't believe it, the usual suspects, religion, special interests, corporations would try to control it, and logically the aliens would be way smarter than us so there would be no point in controlling or fighting them. We'd all just have to sit back and wait. At this point other explanations involve tin foil hats and conspiracies so .... It would have the same polarizing effect on society and countries that any other "major event" would have. we are a predictable species. Rated: +3Vote for this!

The effect it would have on the population is why the governments try their hardest to keep it a secret.
