Would you give your partner a time limit to find a job?

My husban has been looking for a job for 5 months now. At first he wasn't trying very hard but for the past few months he has been applying to lots of places. My mum keeps bugging me that I should leave him and kick him out. She seems to think I should set a date he should have a job by. I personally think it's ludacrious. I'm not going to kick out the person I love to live in the streets, he has no where else to go and no income. Just wondering if other people would consider doing something like that?

In this and most other things, keep your mum at bay. She sounds like she thinks she should still be making the decisions for you. A parents opinion on your relationship should always be treated with a very large pinch of salt, as she will unquestioningly take your side when she feels that you are geeting a raw deal from your partner. In fact, she hasn't got a clue what she's talking about, only you know the reality of the situation, which you clearly presented in your question. Ignore anyone who gives this sort of advice, its so much easier to point in from the oustide and say'well, if i were you, i'd...' whereas in actual fact they would do no such thing, just hot air.

Of course not.

It might be helpful to work together to set goals on how many applications he should have out there at once, but as long as he is making the effort, ultimateums only hurt the people you love.

Believe me, being married also, he already feels humiliated (to some degree) that he is not the provider of the household. Any man with even a little ambition takes great pride in being that.

He needs your support in a way that is loving, but not overpowering.

generally speaking, ultimatums don't work. being supportive is more helpful but sometimes that doesn't work either! times are tough right now and finding a job is hard. if he was fired, he was probably depressed for a while. give him time and don't always listen to your mum. it's your marriage, for better or worse. ask your husband HOW you can support him and help him. networking is very important, so encourage him to do so. good luck!

No, but it is a difficult situation. My husband was unemployed twice while I was pregnant and it was unbelievably stressful.

Give him a deadline, but to revise his strategy maybe...?
