Yes. Used to play tennis with my best friend, who was a girl, all the time. The only hope I had was to make her laugh and lose concentration.

I used to play table tennis with a girlfriend who could beat me if she held the paddle with her teeth. Her father was a champion TT player and taught his children well. In fact, she could speak far better French, run faster than me (a marathon runner), and was rich. Still, one day she said, ‘you can do so many things better than me’!!??? Meanwhile, as far as I was concerned, I just wanted to do things with her; NEVER once said that she was not as good as me at something--never. I in no way have ever thought of my girlfriends or women friends as competitors, therefore it gives no pleasure to ‘beat’ them. On the other hand, I have experienced FAR more women who DO see life as a competition between men and women, and who seem capable of doing almost anything to 'win'. Another difference between most of the men and women I have known is that, while men will definitely compete—sometimes very aggressively—against other men, they tend not to make it a personal thing. Women, on the other hand, seem to take competition with men or women VERY personally. This is one reason why most men don’t want to compete against women—women can be vicious, whereas male opponents generally accept losing---even if with some anger—but the next day everything is fine. This can be especially true if playing against a girlfriend—beat her and you may end up on the couch for a few days. So, I think the real reason men may tend avoid this kind of competition is that many women lack of what men call ‘sportsmanship’—win, lose, or draw, I did my best and had a good time, and maybe I’ll win next time.
