I have the latter and it's as if he is dead anyway. I would trade it for the former in a heartbeat.

Well, I suppose the living one could always change...... Death, however, is a final.

I would rather him to still be alive and I would decrease contact with him to protect my feelings. I wouldn't want anyone to die.

considering the jackass i unfortunately have for a dad, i'd rather have a father who loved me dearly, and i him, but passed away. it's been terrible to have a dad for 42 yrs that doesn't love you, has never done anything for you and you can't count on. great question btw.

This shouldn't be difficult to choose.

I had a wonderful relationship with my dad that died when I was 16, and I had lots of friends who have absent fathers or divorced parents. I wouldn't trade places with any of them.

Everyone dies, the question is how they live and love while they are alive.

I would rather have a father who loved me and passed away seeing how the father I have should be in prison for what he has done and is a complete waste of space.

I would rather have a father who loved me ad has passed away. The years we spent together brought us closer and I wouldn't change it for a minute. He was a wonderful father and I love him. I really miss him, ad wish I could have him back long enough to walk me down the aisle on m wedding day.

I prefer a passed father that loves me & shows it even after death, for there is still very clear evidence of that fact repeating itself in my very own being & values.

I've got one that doesn't really give a hoot about me in general, but loves me in his own way.... and he's still alive. I like him alive.

I would give anything to have a father who loves me but died,at least I would know he loved me.

My father is a live and does not care anything about me,and the pain is there but I move on,I am a grown man,I dont need my father anymore.

Obviously the first option. Even if briefly you will always know you were loved unconditionally.
The second choice is truly depicable but sadly , way too common .

My dad is alive and is a bitter, hateful and resentful man. Not to mention he beat me and let me go hungry often times.

"drcynic" said it best.
