Depend on a circumstances but mostly I tell truth in a very nice way but if horrible truth need to be told, I would try to mitigate it or avoid the subject. Lying isn't really my forte.

You can be honest without being nasty,mean or hurtful. I'd rather tell my friend that her choice of clothing looks bad before a non friend is rude about it.
