You’re having lunch with three people you respect and admire. They all start criticising a close friend of yours,

not knowing she is your friend. The criticism is distasteful and unjustified. What do you do?

Done at work very recently. When i explained I got on very well with the person (who has bpd) and I admired the fact she wasn't just another sheep... didn't go down too well, but my grin could be seen for miles I suspect :)

I tactfully point out they are a friends of mine, and find it unfortunate they don't see the same qualities in her/him as I do. It puts the person/people in their place in a dominant, but pleasant way. It usually shuts people right up.

Tell themyou don't feel comfortable hearing this, because she is your friend, and you haven't noticed any of those negative traits in her.

I would defend her. I don't care who it is; NO ONE can make fun of my friends!!!

I pretend to choke and knock over everything possible then pretend to throw up in my napkin, maybe fall onto the floor and start fitting!

Invite them, one at a time, to go to the restroom with you, where you inject them with sodium pentothal, bind and gag them and leave them on the stools to be found later, delirious. :{)

I'd tell them that the person they're speaking about is my friend and go from there.

You say something positive about the person, and try to break the ring of criticism.
