It depends but I'm known to say: "I don't need your advice. I just need to vent." or "I could really use your advice."

Now that I do that it makes life easier because sometimes people just want to give you advice and you don't want it. Of course I will be polite.

And I "try" to ask others if they want advice or just to vent. Since I've been there before I have to be sensitive to their needs.
