I found a diamond engagement ring before at a park and I contacted the park office to report having found it. I also gave them my name and telephone number and said if anyone reports losing one ask them to contact me and describe the ring and I will gladly return it. Some poor woman called within hours, perfectly described it and was a week from being married. She was crying, scared, said they didn't have money to replace it. I even asked her where she had been in the park and she told me one small area that was the region in which I had discovered the ring.

Giving it back felt much better than the small sum of cash it could have been sold for. YET I never trust anyone when I find valuables, especially not the police. There is corruption everywhere so I encourage everyone on being diligent about finding the rightful owners yourself.

It depends on where I found it. If it's a store or Restaurant I would check back for a week to see if someone asked about missing Jewelry. If nothing came up I would keep it.

I don't think I would advertise, but I would look for advertisements about lost rings. I would insist on a reward, because no one needs a diamond ring, it's not like someone lost their paycheck or credit card. If I didn't find the owner soon, I would sell it.

Look around for the owner. If I didn't see them I'd put up a sign saying:
'I found something valuable. Did you lose it? Call XXXXXXX'
    Then I'd wait...but not forever.

Call the police and let the forensics collect it since it might be a crime scene and I don't want to get caught with stoled goods.

Try to find the owner, I have no use for a diamond ring.
