I told the cashier to let him through - I would cover his debt along with my purchase. He looked astounded, amazed and so thankful that a complete stranger would do this for him. I know he was thankful because he posted a personal thank you note in the local news paper explaining this situation.

As I walked up to the door, a small elderly lady approached at the same time. I held the door and exchanged pleasantries with her. I stood behind her at the counter as she waited for her dress. The young lady hung her bag on the hook and told her the amount. The lady took out her purse and almost immediately I could tell that there was a problem. The lady began fumbling through her purse, carefully at first, but with a growing sense of urgency, I heard her mutter a couple of times.... " Where is my money?" "I know its here somewhere." After a minute or so of this it was quite apparent that she had misplaced either her money or her wallet somewhere. She seemed to be completely devastated by this and very close to tears. I told the young lady behind the counter "I will take care of it for her"... The elderly lady looked at me incredulously, with a look in her eyes that I will never forget, and simply said "Thank you... " The girl behind the counter gave her the dress and she went out the door. After she was gone, I turned to the girl behind the counter to settle my bill. She explained to me that the elderly ladies husband had just passed away on Wednesday and that the dress was the one she was wearing to the funeral on Monday morning. She said that it was the nicest thing she had seen anyone do in a long tme and that it showed her that chivalry wasn't dead. I am sure that it is the best eight dollars I have ever spent.

| Respond to this Question | | paying my credit card bill | | In reading these posts...One thing has came to my mind.....We all do so much for those that we do not know...And most of the time we dod not even know that we are doing anything...
If while you are out on the streets....and you pass someone and smile...Well that is something that just might change that persons life....Might just have saved it...Or if you look at someon that is dirty....and sluring their words....Well most would pull away....But think of this one thing...That dirty...homeless person....Could just be Ill....or perhaps might have been attacked...and is injured...And really needs your help.....It takes far to lettle to look that person in the eyes....and offer something that costs you nothing....A smile...and a hello...We all have so many of them...We will never run out of them....Sometimes it is that small conection with another human...That does the most....I mean...You never know.....
That person just might feel so all alone in this world....That they might be thinking...Why even bother to keep on going.....But that smile...and that one little word.....Well you just migh give them the strength...and the courage to keep on going....and it could save their life...
I know that this does not even start to andwer the question....But it was the answer...that was in my heart to give...But if you really need an answer....I looks someone in the eyes....smiled....and said Hello | | helping a shopper in target pick up the items that had tumbled out of her basket | | a lady dropped her phone and by the time i notice that she left it on the ground in a restuarant, i ran out into 30 degree weather in the snow, across the street and into a really creepy store to give it to her, then i realized i didn't know how to get back to the restaurant... | | I usually leave the door open for strangers walking in and out of the stores. | | I listened.., to an old man who just needed to make a connection with someone.
