I Almost Wrecked On The Freeway
Okay, so I have been out of work for awhile. Yea, I have unemployment for now but it doesn't cover the bills, but that isn't news to anyone I am sure. Anyway, this opportunity comes up for me to make a little cash on the side. Is it wrong that I didn't report this as income? Oh well, I don't care, gonna do what I need to in order to keep the family in vittles.
So I had to fight a little to get this work but fortunately the folks making the choices had their backs against the wall and didn't really have a choice so I got the work. It was scraping out a bunch of metal carts for a local newspaper. I couldn't pass it up considering what scrap steel was going for.
So I am busting my tail for about 3 days getting these carts cleaned up of all the non metal parts (worth more that way) and I am hauling them away in my Dodge pickup. I am on my way back from the recycling yard when I hear a little whine start in the rear end of my truck and I thought I better pull over and check it out but before I get all the way to the side of the road that little whine becomes a loud howling. I thought she ain't gonna make it to the side of the road and just about then the rear tires lock up solid. I was able to keep it straight for a bit but must of over corrected because she spun out on me. At one point I thought sure as hell it was gonna roll over on me but it didn't.
It was an E ticket ride for sure. I had a buddy with me and after it was all over he said,"I am impressed as hell" and I asked why, because ultimately we wound up setting facing the wrong way in traffic and cause a traffic jam. He said "I'm not impressed with your driving skills, I am impressed that you don't have to change your undershorts after that" It was a little hairy looking up and seeing a lot of cars heading straight for us.
So I get the truck home (thank heaven for triple A) and tore the cover off of the gear box on the back axle. It was full of what used to be an axle bearing. Fortunatelyt I can do a lot of the work on my vehicles but it was still a bummer. I had a limited time to finish the salvage job and no truck. By the time I rented a truck to finish the job and found the parts I needed for my truck about $1100 of the $1900 I made was gone.
Was I being punished for not reporting the income to unemployment? Nah, I don't think so, just bad luck.
