A midwifes tales...
by Jayce McMillan Unsafe Co-sleeping FB
This is one of my MANY stories from working in hospitals, it was 2008 (maternity ward) and i was going into change over for my shift to start, we would always get told first off who were the co sleepers and we would check on them first.. that day their were 5 of them, the first room i went into the baby was sleeping peacefully with his mum, i took his temperature to make sure he was ok (as co-sleeping can raise babies temperatures) and he was fine, same as 2nd and 3rd! the 4th one i went into i could not find the baby anywhere! i started panicking, i woke the mother up asking her where is your baby, over and over till she woke up properly and to find her screaming as she suffocated her baby, the baby was fully under her body, i will never forget the way the baby looked! she was completely blue, not one breath coming out of the baby. (the baby was checked half an hour before hand) I tried everything i could to bring this baby back to life but nothing helped, she was gone... so we called the doctor in he did what he had to do and i went on a break (and i had to see a counselor)... 2 hours i went back in and the mother was still sitting their crying, i went and sat on her bed as she looked at me and said i wish i listened to you yesterday because if i did my little girl would still be here with me now.. an hour after me and her talking i had to get back to work... i walked into the 5th one and it was like dashavou over again my belly started turning when i couldn't find the child, i ripped the blankets back and the mother flew up and still no baby! all of a sudden i realize i was standing in a pool of blood! i felt so sick as i slowly lent down to look under the bed and their was her son covered in blood, he had fallen out of bed (WITH the rails up!) and landed on his head.. he had lost so much blood but was still breathing a little bit but extremely lethargic.. the doctor was in the ward and heard the mother scream and he came running in to find me trying to stop the bleeding, he took the baby and ran into the operating theater... 6 hours later the doctor came out and told us that he is stable but he doesn't know how he will go.. this baby pulled through but it was very touch and go for 3 months!!! that is how long this mother and her baby had to stay in hospital.. i still hear from this mother allot and he is now 3 but has severe autism and brain damage from the fall and loss of blood and oxygen... I WILL NEVER ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO CO-SLEEP AFTER SEEING WHAT I HAVE SEEN....
Now another story of many, (at my best friends house) my best friend had 2 beautiful twin boys 5 years ago... i walked into her house on day to find one of the twins on the ground out of her bed with blood coming out of his mouth convulsing, he had fallen off my best friends arm, smacked his head on her side table and landed on the ground, i tried keeping him alive for as long as the ambulance took to get their (took 4 mins but it felt like a life time) the hospital did and tried everything they could to save my nephews life but his brain was to damaged and he kept dying when we turned the machine off... my best friend finally decided to turn the machine off for good (as soon as ALL her family members were their) and i will never forget the smile on the babies face as soon as they turned the machine off it was as if he was thanking them for doing it... her other son is a very healthy boy but has never been happy unless my 6 yr old boy is around him... he is grieving worse then what my best friend is, even though he was only a baby also when this happened but he still feels like his missing something in his life! and he is, his twin brother from co-sleeping
Another one (in emergency) my first time of working in emergency after i quit doing maternity, i had a phone call come in saying that a lady was coming in as their baby wasn't breathing and an ambulance was bringing her husband in! so we were trying to think and think and think of what could of happened as they were the only details we got... as soon as this baby came in she was mangled, one of her arms was twisted behind her back, one half of her body was sunken in including her face.. he dad accidentally did it to her.. they were sleeping together and all of a sudden her dad went to roll over and died of a heart attack and landed on his daughter.. the mum found them 2 hours later after she finished dropping the other kids off to school and doing the shopping.. we could not save this baby she was completely crushed and her husband died as soon as he had the heart attack, this poor lady and her 3 other children has lost a child/sister and a husband/dad all because of co sleeping....
Is it worth the risk?
