I was excited to live in an apartment off-campus because other than a new sense of freedom, I could get a cat. My roommates and I even had an on/off mice problem that needed to be fixed. Since the minute I moved in, I had kept the idea in the back of my mind but never really acted on it. During the past week, this desire had inexplicably come forth to the surface. I spent at least hour a day scouring Craigslist ads and adoption websites for a "perfect" companion. I even responded to a couple "free to good home" ads, but my pickiness kept me from actually going to a shelter.
Yesterday morning, I woke up and instantly switched on my laptop to search postings. I planned to go to a shelter that day after I cat-proofed the house in preparation for someone new. Just as I was about to shutdown my computer and get ready, I received a phone call from my roommate. He said, "you better get down here! There's something here!" I groaned, "alriiiight" and the thought of a furry friend quickened my heartbeat. Although my gut was telling me she was there, I just told myself that such a coincidence would be impossible. I swallowed up my excitement and took my time.
On the way down, I witnessed a baby mouse fall from the ceiling and dead cockroach on the hallway floor. I thought, "Jeez...here comes summer and some major pest problems." Was this what he was talking about? I opened the door to the vestibule and a calico tabby kitten was crouched in the corner. She meowed and let me pick her up. Her whole body shook in my arms. I took her to the bathroom, called the vet, and carried her there in a cardboard box. She had diarrhea and a fever, but no fleas or serious illnesses. After the vet, we went to the pet store to stock up on all the necessary supplies.
Once we arrived home, I let her explore the apartment. Within the hour, she had already caught a baby mouse in the kitchen. I quickly disposed of it and praised her good hunting skills. Today, she caught a fly and swooped it into her mouth with one quick motion of her paw. I knew to name her Artemis, goddess of the hunt and protector of young women. A divine power knew that we needed each other. Either the goddess Artemis lives through this cat or she has given her to me. Either way, it is by the magic of fate and heart that Artemis arrived on my doorstep.
