I have 3 little guys-- all of which are mouthy from time to time... as one becomes nice again, the other ones starts in... the joys!

So you are saying he is bold and quick to speak his mind. A potential orator or lawyer perhaps?

When my youngest son was like that I kept saying "He's not stubborn, obstinate and mouthy. He's bold, forthright and persistent....or He will be when I'm finished with him!" meaning of course guiding and tempering his stronger qualities into assets. He really did turn out okay. Love it when he tells me the same things about his son!

Above all else enjoy every minute with him!

He'll get over the awkward stage, no doubt, but he won't get over the mouthiness unless he has some loving guidance. He needs boundaries and support along with that understanding.
