I Am A Happy Peeper
Oh Spring! Wondrous Spring! Why can't you let us enjoy you on the weekends?
Okay, here's the story. I am the senior adviser for a scouting group that is made up of teenagers. We planned a great camp out as our FIRST outing for the new group. All plans were laid, we loaded up Friday in 75 degree weather and off we went to have a fun camping weekend, with hiking and canoing planned. And Saturday morning at 0730, a cold front blew in with a vengeance. The temperature dropped 20 degrees, there were thunderstorms, our tarp over our cooking area got blown apart bending the poles, and inch plus of rain fell in about an hour, making our first morning miserable. By 8:30 there was a small group of teenagers standing in about the only corner left of the cooking area tarp that was still up, huddled together and shaking uncontrollably... This was not the vision for what we wanted to do to have fun...
So, thinking on my feet, we invaded one of the boys mother's house with food, warmed up, ate breakfast, cleaned up a little, and headed back to the campsite around noon to clean up the site and do some hiking. But the plan at that point was to have a little fun and tear down the camp and head back to his mom's house for dinner and movies. So there was going to be an end to it. When we got back to camp, the place was a mess, the wind never stopped blowing and it was still only 42 degrees. After hiking a little and fishing some, we headed back to camp, built a huge fire, warmed up and started taking everything down and packing up. Off to mom's house for a spaghetti dinner and movies. Everyone was so tired that they were out like lights by 10:00 PM. And then they slept in on Sunday morning until 9:30. But we took another hike through the woods, with people climbing trees, including mom, and then left by 1:30 to return to our respective homes. Not a great camping experience, but all-in-all, not the worse possible times either. So, they all decided that had it not turned so blasted cold, they would have had a good time and are willing to do it again...
So now I can say, I spent the weekend with a bunch of teenagers and all's well that ends well...
