I Am a Hippie
Today I spent time thinking about the world and the people in it, and quite frankly, I don't like how we as human beings chose to live. First I should say that I do very well in school and I'm even running for valedictorian. I respect everyone, especially those older than me, and I choose to do things that are simple for me to do, just to make life a bit easier. That being said, I have to say I simply cannot stand when people think they are more powerful than the rest of us.
I guess I should start small, like with teachers. In my opinion, teachers are there to guide you on the path of success. They cannot force you, they have no control over your future and the decisions you choose to make, and they do not have the authority to tell you what to do. They are there to simply point you in the right direction, teach you things you need to know to be on your way to having a successful life, and be open to new ideas and ways of learning. That's all they are meant to do, that's their job. I don't understand why many teachers like to make things so complicated. They yell when you do something wrong (most of them do, anyway) and they try to tell you what to do (which is something I can't stand.) Teachers are people too, so why do they treat their students like we are lesser people? What puts us below them? Why can't we just look at eachother as equals?
It's something that I think about everyday. What exactly gives people the right to think they have more authority than others? I thought we were all equal? What makes police officers and the government think they can tell us what to do? I think they are just making their job harder than what it should be. Always trying to control people and tell us what's 'wrong' and what's 'right'. Why exactly do people have to have power? I don't think it's really fair. I understand that life isnt fair, but why would we make it even more restricted with giving people power and control over others? Why do we, as human beings, choose to do things the hard and confusing way, when we could have easily choosen the simple way. Maybe the simple way is best. If there was nobody with power, everyone would be equal, everyone would look at eachother as a living, breathing person with thoughts and feelings, hopes and dreams. But instead we look at eachother as insignificant. It seems like we are okay with other people being in pain, with fighting eachother to get what we call 'freedom', and with all this violence and heartbreak that we put on ourselves, as human beings.
All this authority and control we put on ourselves is a man made thing, so why can't we change it? What makes us so afraid of changing what so desperately needs a change? My idealistic views may seem like the typical 'hippie-like' thing to say, but if you really stopped to think about it, isn't it true?
